ABOUT BIOS
BIOS is a conservation group made up of marine specialists, biologists, commercial and sporting divers. The organisation which was officially incorporated as a not for profit company in 1997 with its headquarters in Palio Limani Sptses.
Since 1995 the organisation has organised many conservation exercises in cleaning and collecting debris throughout Greece as well as hosting and organising International Sporting Events in Freediving throughout Greece particularly in Spetses, bringing Spetses to the attention of the nation and to the World, through several documentaries, films and world record diving events.
The purpose of BIOS is to bring awareness as to the need to protect the Agean Sea as a result of pollution, whilst instilling an understanding on a social and educational level as to the oneness the human being has with its marine environment.
Virtually all life on Earth is born from water, the earth is made up of 70% water as are most living creatures and plants.
The Aegean Sea in particular with the Argos Saronikos shares much of the biodiversity of the Mediterranean and still it has endemic and rare species (endemic - species that inhabit only a particular place of the planet).
As human beings, it is imperative that projects of this nature are protected so as to develop our understanding of our natural environment as well as to benefit us on a socio political and socio economic level.
A BIOS PROTECTED MARINE-LIFE ZONE
In this document BIOS with the co-operation of the Local Authorities is proposing to fund and manage a protected bay on the island of Spetses in order to develop and promote the local marine environment for the purposes of Education, Learning, Conservation and Tourism.
LAT 37.16.07 LON 23.06.05
The proposed zone is an area of approximately 247 meters of coastline and shallow water sea, totalling 80, 000 square meters in a large bay that is too shallow for shipping traffic longer than 12 meters. This proposed area is rarely used by the public due to its difficult terrain and inaccessibility. It is however ideal for boat trips and with some effort, by land.
In the first few years, this protected zone will host an array of shoreline marine life, organisms, local fish and mammals, all of which is of great interest to educators, ecologists, students and eco-tourists. The ultimate goal of this protected zone is to evolve into a Sea Park of International standing. |
